Biography

Armando Lulaj (Tirana, 1980) is an artist, filmmaker, playwright, and producer of conflict images. Working across moving image, writing, performance, and research, his practice investigates the relationship between power, political fiction, and social inequality. His work engages with the structures of government, institutional violence, and the mechanisms through which economic and political power shape contemporary life. In 2003, he founded the DebatikCenter of Contemporary Art (D.C.CA) (debatikcenter.net), the first independent, interdisciplinary platform of its kind in Albania. The center connects artists, filmmakers, academics, architects, critics, curators, journalists, translators, and both imaginary and real collectives. It explores the mechanisms shaping contemporary society while developing tools for imagining alternative futures and strategies of resistance to the status quo. Lulaj represented Albania at the Venice Biennale on two occasions: in 2007, as part of a group exhibition, and in 2015, with the solo exhibition Albanian Trilogy: A Series of Devious Stratagems. From 2022 to 2025, he served as artistic director of the multiyear project Manifesto (debatikcenter.net/manifesto). In 2024, he served as a jury member at the DokuFest Film Festival. Since 2026, he has been one of the authors of ESCALATIONS and the curator of the Albanian chapter of Antifascism: Now. His work is held in various significant public and private collections.

EXTREME DISPLAY is a public bus. Engine running. Doors open. No driver. Eight large stones hold it in place. At the vicinity to the BUNA Festival, an ordinary city bus becomes an immobilized machine: operational, accessible, ready to move, but unable to leave. Inside, ""Radio Desertion"" (2023–2030) brings together voices reflecting on war, genocide, political hegemony, and the possibility of deserting history itself. No title. No explanation. No destination. The bus is ready to move. It does not move. EXTREME DISPLAY — a mixed-media installation by Armando Lulaj, presented as part of the Balkan Contemporary Art Prize (B.C.A.P.) / Varna, Bulgaria.
