In 2007, organized civil protests in Bulgaria were rare. ULTRAFUTURO made a performative intervention at the Eagles’ Bridge in Sofia to respond to this civic passivity. We were a “kneeling figure” for 3 hours. Today citizens are encouraged to believe that protest can transform their reality. We are yet to see if this can happen. Today this kneeling person might be the image of the permanent ineffective protester. But civil engagement should not be seen only in the public protest. Resilience emerges in the decision to create, express, and sustain one’s sense of purpose. This attitude leads to victory.
