Biography

Otucha is a Polish word for an act of care between living beings - to give someone otucha is to lift their spirits and surround them with comfort and encouragement. Otucha Collective is a Berlin-based vocal ensemble whose work explores the phenomenon of human voice and collective singing - their empowering, transformative and community-building qualities. The collective's practice centres on the rural singing traditions of so-called Eastern Europe - historically rooted in community care and emotional expression - extended through somatic practice, deep listening, and experimental voice work. Otucha Collective creates performances, public interventions, workshops, and spaces in which deep connection can be experienced through collective sounding and listening. Otucha Collective at BUNA vol. 4 in Varna is embodied by Agnieszka Kucharska, Dorota Michalak, Julia Legeżyńska, Kata Kwiatkowska, Liene Šilde, Mina Đordević.

A field after harvest. The soil turned before winter. Water settling into its cracks. Mist rising. Dark clouds coming closer. Voices travel between work and rest, earth and sky, from one mouth to another. Old songs of love and toil, following changing seasons and socio-political realities, are remembered, misremembered, transformed and resonant again. They travel across generations and geographies. In Songs from the Soil, Otucha Collective takes this instability and persistence as a starting point. The work unfolds as a vocal performance extending across the public space, shaped each time by the location, shared attention and resonance of the moment.
