Biography

Krasimira Butseva is a visual artist, researcher and Senior Lecturer in Photography at London College of Communication. Based between London and Sofia, her practice examines political violence, trauma and memory in post-communist Bulgaria. Working across photography, moving image, sound, archival material, text and installation, she draws on long-term fieldwork, oral histories and sustained collaboration with survivors of state violence and their families. Her research considers the relationship between official archives, institutionalised forgetting and vernacular forms of remembrance, while developing collaborative and counter-archival approaches to complex and contested histories. She is one-third of the artistic collective behind The Neighbours, a multimedia installation based on more than forty interviews with survivors of Bulgaria’s socialist-era camps and prisons. The project represented Bulgaria at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. Butseva received the BAZA Award for Contemporary Art in 2022 and has held fellowships at Akademie Schloss Solitude and Residency Unlimited, New York. She is currently an artist in residence at the Centre for Culture and the Mind at the University of Copenhagen. Her writing includes the article “Vernacular Memorial Museums: Memory, Trauma and Healing in Post-Communist Bulgaria,” published in Museums & Social Issues. Centre for Culture and the Mind Museums & Social Issues.

Cartography of Absence brings together photography, video and photobooks, the work examines inherited absences within the memory of political violence in Bulgaria. Rooted in a decade of archival and field research, it incorporates obstructed images of Persin Island, where the former Belene forced labour camp was located, alongside collected objects, documentary fragments and relatives’ testimonies. Through deliberately incomplete and “poor” images, the project considers how traumatic histories are transmitted across generations, and how art can preserve suppressed traces, resist forgetting and create space for histories excluded from official archives.
