Biography

Born in France, Carole Mousset studied at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where she currently lives and works as an artist-in-residence at Triphasé. Her practice unfolds primarily through painting, sometimes extended into dialogue with ceramics, and investigates the body as a site where intimacy, materiality, and representation intersect. Through a sensorial and embodied approach, her work engages with contemporary feminist concerns and the persistent unease surrounding the female body. Central to her recent work is the figure of a fantastical aquatic creature, developed alongside an evolving neo-mythological text that forms a parallel narrative space to the paintings. This speculative figure operates as both a poetic and political device, opening questions around bodily emancipation, sorority, and the ecological impact of human chemical pollution on aquatic environments. By weaving together fiction and material practice, her work constructs alternative imaginaries through which vulnerable and transformative bodies can be reconsidered. Carole Mousset was awarded the Novembre à Vitry Painting Prize in 2022 (FR). Her work has been presented at Ballroom Gallery in Brussels (BE), at DeStudio during Antwerp Art Weekend (BE), at Scroll Galerie in Nantes (FR), at Spiaggia Libera in Marseille (FR), at Sofia 22 for the Buna Festival in Varna (BGR), and in Paris at Chapelle XIV and Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve (FR), where she held a solo exhibition in the Project Room. She has also undertaken residencies at Le Confort Moderne in Poitiers (FR) and at KHmessen in the Hardangerfjord in Norway.

This is the story of a hybrid aquatic creature. Born from the rage and weariness of human women who chose no longer to navigate a world saturated with hatred, this chimera embodies a radical metamorphosis: she does not disappear, she mutilates borders. She becomes other. Upon contact with waters corrupted by human activity, her body mutates. What should have destroyed her transforms her.
