Biography

In his artistic work, he deals with forms of remembrance and collective memory as well as perspectives of resistance. Gierlinger examines in his films and installations the historical and social traces left behind by different political systems and eras. Thereby he focus on memory spaces, archive, forms of protest, transgenerationality, testimonies and gaps within historical narratives. Central to his work are processes of transformation, constellations between the past and the present, and questions of representation and its effects. In poetic form, Gierlinger examines how visual and narrative structures continue to have an effect and remain visible, interwoven, and experiential in the present, and, not least, raises questions about possible future spaces.
